Winter, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium dolphin with the prosthetic tail who is the star of the upcoming feature film Dolphin Tale, now has her own app and you can use it to feed her. Well, sort of. In the Dolphin Tale: Fling a Fish game for iOS and Android devices the object of the game is to fling fish to Winter past all kinds of obstacles at the aquarium. How do you do this? Using a fish-flinger of course. The fish-flinger is sort of like a spring-loaded catapult that you aim and pull back to fling the fish. If you’re an Angry Birds player you’ll find game play to be very similar, although the fish-flinger is very powerful compared to the slingshot in Angry Birds. So be gentle with your flinging or Winter will go hungry.
There is a free, lite version and a premium version for $1.99, on both platforms. Game play is the same for both but the premium version adds 23 more levels of play for a total of 30 levels. I burned through the first seven levels in about 10 minutes so I’m guessing most kids would do it in five! That means you’ll probably end up buying the full version to keep most kids happy.
The graphics are excellent and game play is smooth. Watch out for the mischievous, leaping otters and tails on the sting rays that will block your fish at the last second. When you’re able to get a fish straight to Winter’s mouth she jumps out of the water and whistles in delight while “walking” with her tail.
The only complaint I have about this game is that when playing on a phone (tested on an iPhone 4) the fish-flinger is really close to the edge of the screen so it’s a little difficult to fling the fish. On the iPad it’s much better because of the larger screen. Other than that, this game is a winner.
